Schantz Viennese fortepiano replica
These instruments are built to order.**
This is a replica of a fortepiano built by Johann Schantz c.1795-1800in Vienna. The original is in a museum in Bath. The compass is FF-a3. Two knee levers provide sustain and moderator and there is a bassoon stop whichoperates upto middle'C'.
Schantz was the first Viennese maker to use a divided bridge. The brass bass strings are on their own bridge and the strings lengths are calculated to give matching tension and inharmonicty with the iron strings. The resultis a particularly good bass and tenor with a good transition between the brass and iron strings. The tone is sonorous with a clear, bright, ringing treble.
As with the original the case is veneered in Yew with an ebony
inlayedline around the bottom of the case.
